Red Natural Dyes

Dyes are soluble, colored organic compounds that are usually applied to textiles from a solution in water.

There are two major types of dyes: natural and synthetic dyes.

  • The natural dyes are complex mixtures of components derived extracted from natural substances such as plants, animals or minerals.
  • Synthetic dyes are made in laboratory. Pigments are chemicals that selectively absorb and reflect different spectra of light.

Natural dyes are derived from plant leaves, wood, bark, stem, seed, root, insects, minerals and  microorganisms. Natural dyes can be used for dyeing natural fiber, food additives, medicines, handicraft items and toys, in leather processing , makeup industry and textile industry.

Madder red, derived from the roots of the Rubia tinctorum plant, contains the red dye alizarin (1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone), as well as purpurin and pseudopurpurin,  which are also anthraquinone derivatives.

The red color in cochineal, derived from the insect Dactylopius coccus, comes from  Carminic acid.

Red ochre's reddish color comes primarily from the mineral hematite (Fe2O3), an iron oxide. It's a natural earth pigment used since ancient times for various purposes, including cave paintings and pottery.

The red color in Monascus purpureus comes from azaphilone pigments, specifically rubropunctamine  and monascorubramine

Few Examples of Red Natural Dyes.....

Plant Dye..
Eg. Rubia Cordifolia - Plant (Maddar Red)

Animal Dye....
Eg. Dactylopius coccus  - Insect  (Cochineal Red)

Mineral Dye...
Eg. Red Ochre  - Stone (Red Ochre)

Microbial Dye...
Eg. Monascus  purpureus  -  Fungi ( Purplish Red)
